How Long Will My Toilet Last?

A toilet is an essential part of any home. You probably can’t imagine your home without one, but due to the nature of them, they are often overlooked appliances. It’s not usually the first thing that comes to mind during a home renovation.

Although most homeowners probably have never asked, “Just how long will my toilet last?” or, “Is there a way to make my toilet last longer?”  These questions might be important to consider.

Toilets really have no determinate life cycle. Essentially, dependent on physical care, one will stick around for as long as a homeowner allows it too. Unless the bowl or base suffers a crack or structural fault, it can continue to function for years to come.

There are steps that homeowners can take to prevent premature structural damage to the appliances. Here are some common habits that homeowners should avoid to keep from damaging their toilets:

  • Do not stand on top of it
  • Do not put heavy objects on the back of the lid
  • Do not pour hot water into a toilet bowl, as it may cause the bowl to crack
  • Be careful not to drop the seat down too heavily
  • Do not mix cleaning chemicals

While toilets themselves can last indefinitely, the mechanics and plumbing systems inside of them must be maintained regularly to continue a functioning life.
