Updated October 2026. This article originally listed 2016 repair prices. Parts and labor costs have changed a lot since then, so we’ve replaced that list with what actually drives the price of an AC repair today.
Air conditioning problems happen to everyone in Tampa, usually on the hottest day of the year. The cost of a repair depends far more on what failed than on anything else, so the most useful thing we can tell you is what moves the price up or down, and how to make sure you’re paying a fair rate.
What affects the cost of an AC repair?
- The part that failed. Small electrical parts like capacitors, contactors, fuses and relays are on the low end. Fan motors, refrigerant leaks and coils cost more. A failed compressor is the most expensive repair and is often the point where replacement makes more sense.
- Refrigerant. Systems that need a leak found and repaired, plus a recharge, cost more, and older systems that use R-22 refrigerant are especially expensive to recharge.
- System age and warranty. Parts still under manufacturer warranty lower your cost. On older systems, we’ll tell you honestly whether a repair is worth it.
- Access and timing. Units in tight attics or emergency after-hours visits can affect labor.

Repair or replace?
If your system is more than 12 to 15 years old, uses R-22 refrigerant, or needs a major repair like a compressor, replacement may be the better investment. See our current guide to AC replacement cost in Tampa, or learn more about our AC repair service.
