Local landmark
Land O' Lakes got its name in 1950, when residents chose it for the dozens of small lakes scattered across the area. The best known is Lake Padgett, a ski lake surrounded by homes. Those lakes are part of central Florida's karst landscape: limestone underground that dissolves over time, which is also why Pasco County is part of Florida's "sinkhole alley." Off SR 52, Conner Preserve protects 3,486 acres with about 17 miles of trails.
Land O' Lakes absorbed the old settlements of Denham, Ehren and Gowers Corner, and the Dupree Gardens roadside attraction once drew tourists here. The population grew from about 4,500 in 1980 to almost 36,000 in 2020.
Most of that growth came recently. Census data puts the typical home's build year around 1998, and more than a third were built in the 2000s. That means a large group of builder-grade AC systems and water heaters now 15 to 20-plus years old. The older lake communities, like Lake Padgett Estates from the 1980s, fall in the polybutylene years. And some older lake and rural homes run on private wells and septic.
