Local landmark
Every year in late winter, Plant City hosts the Florida Strawberry Festival. It started in 1930 and now draws about half a million people over 11 days. The fields around town grow more than three-quarters of the nation's midwinter strawberries.
Plant City's story starts earlier. It was first called Ichepucksassa, then Cork, and was renamed for railroad builder Henry B. Plant after his South Florida Railroad arrived in 1884. The 1914 Plant City High School building is now the community center, and the Plant City Union Depot has been on the National Register since 1975.
Plant City has some of the oldest housing in our service area. The typical home was built around 1989, but nearly one in five dates to before 1970. Historic homes downtown may still have galvanized and cast iron pipe. Walden Lake, started in 1978, and the many homes built through the mid-1990s fall in the polybutylene years. City water comes from deep Floridan Aquifer wells with natural iron, and outside city limits many homes run on their own well and septic.
