Local landmark
Ask anyone in Tampa about Ybor City and they'll mention 7th Avenue, La Séptima. The American Planning Association named it one of the "10 Great Streets in America" in 2008. A short walk away, the Columbia Restaurant has been serving since 1903 and now takes up an entire city block.
Vicente Martinez Ybor founded the neighborhood in 1885 to make cigars, and Tampa annexed it in 1887. By 1929, Ybor's factories turned out about 500 million cigars a year. Workers lived in small wooden "casitas" near the factories, and many of those homes are still standing. In 1990, Ybor became a National Historic Landmark District.
