Local landmark
If there's one place everyone knows in Clearwater, it's Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach. The pier first opened in 1962 and was rebuilt in 1990, and the nightly Sunsets at Pier 60 celebration started in 1995. Hurricanes Helene and Milton damaged it in 2024, and it partly reopened in 2025. Across the causeway, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium has been rescuing sea life since 1972, and it was home to Winter the dolphin.
Clearwater began as Fort Harrison, an outpost built around 1835. It was incorporated as Clear Water Harbor in 1891 and renamed Clearwater in 1906. Harbor Oaks, on the old Fort Harrison bluff, dates to the early 1900s. Skycrest filled in with 1950s ranch homes, Imperial Park with 1960s and 70s homes, and Countryside and Coachman Ridge mostly in the 1980s and 90s. Out on the beach and Sand Key, it's mostly condo towers.
Each of those eras brings its own problems. Older homes often have galvanized pipe and cast iron drains. Countryside and Coachman Ridge were built right in the polybutylene years. Beach condos fight salt air. And in September 2024, Helene set a record 6.67-foot water level at Clearwater Beach, flooding homes and businesses across the barrier islands.
