Local landmark
Bradenton's front yard is the Manatee River. The Bradenton Riverwalk opened in 2012 and runs about 1.5 miles along the water downtown. Farther west, where the river meets Tampa Bay, the De Soto National Memorial marks Hernando de Soto's 1539 landing.
Bradenton is one of the oldest towns on Florida's Gulf Coast. Josiah Gates settled the area in 1842, and the city is named for Dr. Joseph Braden, whose fortified house sheltered settlers during the Seminole Wars. It was first spelled "Braidentown," then "Bradentown"; the "w" was dropped in 1925. Bradenton became the Manatee County seat in 1887, was incorporated in 1903, and merged with the city of Manatee in 1943.
That long history means a wide range of homes. The Village of the Arts has old Florida bungalows and cottages, Riverview Boulevard has historic riverfront homes, and West Bradenton has older homes under big oaks. Homes from these early eras often still have galvanized supply pipe and cast iron drains. Newer neighborhoods like Greyhawk Landing date from the 2000s. In 2024, Hurricane Helene's surge flooded several Bradenton neighborhoods, so equipment in low areas should be checked.
